So far, the most rewarding part of being on the BLSA E-Board has been engaging with the incoming class of 2023 and working to set them up for success during their first semester, despite its "unconventional" nature.
Creating the Law Firm Partnership and the Diversity receptions so we could stop doing bake sales that weren't profitable, have money for travel to MABLSA and NBLSA, and become less dependent on the Law School for budgets. They complimented well with the Alumni dinners that were created around that time. I feel like that allowed our chapter to create connections.
It's a three-way tie: supporting the professional development of BLSA members, students of color, and women at the law school, working with BLSA teammates who are accomplished, smart, kind, and creative, and working with lawyers and legal professionals who are committed to advancing diversity in the legal profession.
Bringing my wife, Dr. Anastasia Williams (UVA Medicine 1998), and children, Kiara (UVA Law 2015 & UVA Undergrad 2011) and Sanford (UVA Undergrad 2013) to many BLSA events and having my classmates treat them like family. Kiara and Sanford were 4 and 2 when I started Law School and they had a great time in Charlottesville in great part due to my BLSA classmates (and other classmates and professors) who are lifelong friends.
In February 2021, Tiffany Mickel became the first Black woman to be elected editor-in-chief of the Virginia Law Review. On her achievement, Mickel said:
“I am not only honored to contribute to a legal publication with such a rich history of advancing groundbreaking legal theories, but also extremely grateful to stand on the shoulders of the women and people of color who came before me.”
Honestly, contributing to the success of one of the most active student groups at the law school is a reward all in itself. It warms my heart to know that my peers and colleagues trust me enough to represent their interests to the school and the larger legal community, particularly in the wake of the global protests and movements we've seen regarding the value of black lives and the structural injustices in the law.
